Chalk up another high point on our trip. This time it was South Dakota and like the others is was a high point of opportunity. We were in the area, it was there, might as well hike up it. Harney Peak is not only the highest point in the Southernmost Dakota, but it is also the highest point east of the Rockies and west of the Pyrenees. Trivial. Afterall some place is going to fall into that category.
The 3.5 mile trail takes you up to an observation tower complete with dam and pumphouse built by the CCC boys back in 1939.
We opted to make a loop and it paid off in the form of spectacular Needles scenery.
The chipmonks on the summit are very conditioned to humans. This one thought Monfreid might have some food to share.
